I tried upgrading to Win 7 today and this game kept crashing...especially multiplayer.
In NYC, I get the initial loading screen after playing for a few minutes and just hangs. I tried HC server and during the download of openmodware (whatever that name is), I get the program stop working window and have to close the program.
After googling, I read that PB is not friendly with Win 7 but I thought some of you are on Win 7.
The steps I did: Install COD4, apply the patch 1.6 to 1.7, update PB, copy over my profile.
I since reverted back to Vista but would like to use Win 7 as I have upgraded all my other computers.
What a waste of a day.

Wow, now I totally feel inept.
This was a clean formatted OS install, I re-installed COD4 twice and I got all the updated drivers.
I have Intel Core 2 Duo E7400, 4GB Kingston RAM in dual channel mode, Asus 5PQL-Pro MB, MSI Radeon 4890...only needed to really update the sound, lan, Intel chipset, and vid card drivers. Using Win 7 Ultimate and most of the other drivers came with the OS.
I tried running in different compatibility modes as well but didn't work.
I can't possibly figure what I did wrong then since it's working for most.
I like Win 7 and is much faster booting up than Vista I tell ya.
Edit: Just noticed, I didn't update DirectX, just used the one that came with the game...does the DX version really matter. I think it was version 9.

Make sure you have the current build of dx, also what is it doing exactly? I am and have been running it for some time, only issue I had was a mircostudder in sli and a temp black screen after the game loaded ( was in game then would have a all black screen but could her sound of the game) which was caused by win 7 visualizations. Let us know a little more detail and we can help you out i am sure.
I thought DirectX 11 comes with Win7 but installed downloaded the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. Also installed the DirectX 9c that came with my COD4 disc.
Updated PB. I downloaded the pbsetup, ran it, added Cod4 to and ran update.
When I play HC, it starts the download for zopen_mod file and about 1/3 way into download, it crashes...Appcrash error and the window says to search for solution or close program. Basically I can't get into HC server.
When I play NYC, I can play for about a few minutes and then I get the map load screen and it hangs. No error given.
I also noticed my pings are jumping around like crazy...I'm usually sub 50 in the server but seen it going way past 150.
I read about running it in compatibility mode and tried but didn't work.
EDIT: I think I may have stabilized it for now...it may have been due to my Realtek Onboard HD sound and after fiddling around with drivers/settings...I can play NYC at least through one round...will have to play more to find out.
I still get downloading error trying to get z_openwarfare.iwd...always gets stuck at 372kb, but managed to manually download this and the maps so I'll have to see if it's stable but at least HC server loads now.
How many people have/use Realtek onboard sound?

I am running on 7, Punkbuster update may solve your problem. I had a similar problem when I first started it on 7 but after a PB update and a couple restarts it sorted itself out.
Good Luck

i would make sure you have all the 64 bit drivers in....all sounds like a driver issue...

i wouldn't use a 32bit os anymore unless i didn't have a 64bit processor.
